If you are curious about what it means to be a journalist, reporting and producing news that informs communities, the Scripps Howard Emerging Journalists Program at Elon University offers the ideal platform to explore your media interests.
Thanks to financial support form the Scripps Howard Fund, Elon’s School of Communications established in 2021 a free, educational initiative to inspire high school students to embark on journalism careers.
This year through the program’s virtual Exposure component, students participated in four interactive learning sessions and built foundational journalism skills. High school juniors who completed the Exposure component were invited to apply for a summer on-campus residential learning workshop. The 2024 Immersion program comprised 18 students and ran from June 17 – June 28, 2024, and the Emerging Journalists Program paid for students’ travel, lodging, meals and instructional materials.
Additionally, each student who completes the Immersion program are assigned two mentors – an Elon communications student and a working professional – to help them identify, report and produce multimedia stories during the student’s senior year of high school.
At Elon, students develop the necessary skills to tell compelling, ethical and accurate stories that audiences need and value.
